What is vitamin D3 for?

The best-established role is regulating calcium and phosphorus in the blood, which is fundamental for bone mineralisation. Groups at particularly high risk of deficiency include:

  • People living at high latitudes (essentially all of Europe) who spend little time in the sun;
  • People with darker skin, because melanin reduces vitamin D synthesis;
  • Older adults, because skin produces less vitamin D with age;
  • People with obesity, because vitamin D is sequestered in adipose tissue;
  • People with inflammatory bowel disease or who have had bariatric surgery, as absorption is compromised.

If you fall into any of these groups, or simply don't get enough sun (likely if you work in an office), it makes sense to consider supplementation. But don't start blindly: a simple blood test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, and that's the right starting point.

Vitamin D3 vs. vitamin D2: what's the difference?

There are two main forms of vitamin D: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). D3 is the one your body produces naturally and is more effective at raising blood levels. D2 is plant-derived and used in some supplements, but D3 is the more effective form for raising and maintaining blood levels.

How to take vitamin D3: dose and timing

Consistency matters more than timing. Taking it every day at the same time is the simplest way to ensure stable levels. Some people prefer weekly or monthly doses, but evidence shows daily doses are more effective and carry less risk of side effects.

Too much vitamin D3: can it hurt?

Yes, it can. Vitamin D toxicity is rare but does happen, usually with very high doses (above 10,000 IU per day for months). Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, weakness and, in severe cases, kidney damage from hypercalcaemia (too much calcium in the blood).
