As with almost everything in nutrition, the difference between what helps and what harms is a matter of dose. For most healthy adults, an adequate intake of selenium poses no risk, and the body even has mechanisms to cope with small excesses. But there is a limit, and consistently exceeding it can cause serious problems. This article explains exactly where that limit lies, who should be more careful, and which signs indicate you should stop and talk to a professional.

What does "too much" selenium actually mean?

There is an important difference between the recommended daily allowance and the tolerable upper intake level. The recommended daily allowance is what most people need to maintain normal bodily functions. The tolerable upper intake level is the amount you can consume daily without risk of adverse effects. Between these two values there is a considerable margin, but not an infinite one. Selenium is not like some water-soluble vitamins, where excess is simply excreted in urine. Selenium accumulates in the body, and it is that accumulation that causes problems.

Acute toxicity — that is, a single very high dose — is rare and usually results from industrial accidents or poorly manufactured supplements. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and, in extreme cases, respiratory and cardiac problems. But the more common scenario is chronic toxicity, which happens when you consume, over weeks or months, an amount above the tolerable upper intake level. Symptoms appear gradually and are often mistaken for other things.

What are the first signs of excess?

The most well-known sign of excess selenium is a garlic-like odour on the breath and a metallic taste in the mouth. This happens because the body excretes excess through breath and sweat, and the resulting compound has that characteristic smell. Another classic symptom is brittle nails and hair loss. These signs are often ignored or attributed to stress or another deficiency, which delays diagnosis. If you notice these symptoms and are taking a selenium supplement, the first thing to do is stop and see if they improve.

Other common effects include fatigue, irritability, and skin problems such as dermatitis or rashes. In more advanced cases, there may be neurological damage, with tingling in the hands and feet, and loss of coordination. But it is important to stress: these severe symptoms only appear with very high doses, far above what any normal supplement contains. The real risk lies in taking several supplements that contain selenium at the same time, or in consuming foods from regions with soil very rich in selenium, such as certain areas of Brazil or the United States.

Who should be extra cautious?

There are groups for whom selenium requires more attention. People with chronic kidney disease may have difficulty excreting excess, increasing the risk of accumulation. Those with autoimmune thyroid conditions, such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, should be careful, because selenium influences thyroid function and high doses may worsen the situation. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should strictly follow their doctor's recommendations, because excess can affect the development of the fetus or baby.

Children are another vulnerable group, not because selenium is especially dangerous for them, but because gummy supplements are easy to mistake for sweets. A child who eats several gummies at once can ingest a dose well above what is recommended for their weight. If this happens, do not wait and see: contact your doctor, pharmacist, or your country's poison information centre. Therefore, these supplements should be kept out of reach of children, just like any medication. Interactions with medications and other supplements

Selenium interacts with some medications, although the evidence is stronger for some than others. Platinum-based chemotherapy drugs, such as cisplatin, are known to reduce selenium levels in the body, and some studies suggest supplementation may help, but this should always be discussed with the oncologist. Corticosteroids, used in inflammatory conditions, may decrease selenium absorption. And proton pump inhibitors, those medications for gastric reflux, can also affect the absorption of several minerals, including selenium.

There is also an important interaction with vitamin C and zinc, which can reduce selenium absorption if taken at the same time. It is not a serious problem, but if you take supplements with these minerals, it is advisable to space the doses a few hours apart. Selenium also interacts with arsenic and mercury, but that is more relevant in contexts of environmental exposure than in normal supplement use. There are signs that justify a trip to the doctor, and others that are merely transient. What do gummies change in the equation?

Gummies are a convenient way to take supplements, but they add some considerations. First, the taste and texture make them appealing to children, which reinforces the need to keep them out of reach. Second, gummies contain sugar or sweeteners, and although it is not true that all gummies have sugar, many do. If you are watching your sugar intake, check the label. Third, the fact that they are chewable can lead to eating more than the indicated dose, because they taste good. The dose is there for a reason; it is not a recommendation, it is a safety limit.

There is also the dental issue. Gummies can be sticky and, if consumed frequently, may contribute to cavities, especially if they contain sugar. Selenium: myths and truths

One of the most common myths is that "more selenium is better". The truth is that selenium has a narrow therapeutic window: below a certain level, there is deficiency; above, there is toxicity. Another myth is that selenium on its own prevents cancer. There were studies that suggested an association, but later trials did not confirm benefit, and some even suggested increased risk at high doses. Current evidence does not support the idea that taking selenium prevents cancer. There are also those who believe selenium is a miracle antioxidant that slows ageing. It is true that selenium is part of antioxidant enzymes, but the body already has its own systems; supplementing does not speed anything up.

A truth with scientific support is that selenium is essential for thyroid function. The thyroid has the highest concentration of selenium per gram of tissue in the human body, and the enzymes that convert thyroid hormone into its active form depend on selenium. In regions with selenium-poor soil, supplementation can correct deficiencies and improve thyroid function. But this does not mean that taking selenium cures thyroid diseases; it only means that deficiency should be corrected, and that is done with a blood test.

Another truth is that selenium has established scientific evidence for some functions. The European Union authorises claims such as "selenium contributes to the normal function of the immune system" and "selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress". These claims are based on solid evidence, but they are modest: they contribute, they do not guarantee. They do not promise immunity or perfect skin.

What is still not known

Despite decades of research, there are gaps. We do not know exactly what the optimal dose is for each person, because it varies with genetics, health status, and diet. The interaction between selenium and other substances, such as iodine, is complex and not yet fully understood. We also do not know whether moderate-dose supplementation has long-term benefits for people who already have adequate levels. Some studies suggest there may be a beneficial effect in certain populations, but others find no difference. Honesty requires saying: for those who eat a varied diet, supplemental selenium probably makes no difference at all, either for better or worse, as long as you do not exceed the dose.

There is also uncertainty about the exact form of selenium in supplements. There are several forms, such as selenomethionine and sodium selenite, and it is not clear whether one is superior to another. Most supplements use selenomethionine, which is the form found in foods, but the evidence does not show a clear difference in terms of health. If you are taking selenium, the most important thing is the total dose, not the form.

What to do, then?

If you are considering taking selenium, the first step is to work out whether you need it. Most people in Europe get enough selenium through their diet — nuts, fish, meat, eggs, and cereals. Deficiency is rare in healthy people. If you have doubts, ask your doctor for a blood test. Only if your levels are below normal does supplementation make sense. If you already take a supplement, check the dose on the label and compare it with the tolerable upper intake level. Do not take more than one source of selenium at the same time. And if you feel any strange symptoms, stop and talk to a healthcare professional. Selenium is not a villain, but it is not a superhero either. It is an essential mineral that deserves respect — and respect begins with knowing the limits.
