Tocopherol is the most common form of vitamin E, and its main, well-documented benefit is protecting cells against oxidative stress. But there are more nuances, and some claims floating around do not have the scientific backing they appear to have. What is tocopherol and what does it do?

Tocopherol belongs to the vitamin E family, which also includes tocotrienols. Within the tocopherols, there are four variants: alpha, beta, gamma and delta. Alpha-tocopherol is the most active in the human body and the one most supplements use. Its primary job is to act as an antioxidant: it captures free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells, proteins and DNA. That damage, known as oxidative stress, is linked to ageing and various chronic diseases, although the relationship is not straightforward.

Your body cannot make vitamin E on its own, so you need to get it from food or supplements. Good food sources of tocopherol include vegetable oils (such as sunflower and almond oil), nuts, seeds and leafy green vegetables. For most people, a balanced diet covers daily needs. One important point: tocopherol does not prevent or treat disease.
